How to Care for Your Teeth After a Dental Cleaning in Frisco

Woman brushing teethMaking regular trips to the dentist for a dental cleaning in Frisco is a key part of maintaining good oral health. However, once you walk out of the dentist’s office doors, it is up to you to keep your teeth and gums healthy until your next appointment. Most adults know they should brush and floss every day to keep their teeth white and strong, but what many may not know is the correct techniques involved. Good oral hygiene requires more than just a dollop of toothpaste on a brush and a quick scrub of the tooth enamel. To make sure you are thoroughly cleaning your teeth every day, be sure to review the proper dental care techniques below.

What is the Proper Brushing Technique?

Brushing regularly is only effective if done properly and for the appropriate length of time. Whenever you pick up your toothbrush to clean your teeth, be sure to remember the following tips:

  • Brush twice daily for a full two minutes each time, as recommended by the American Dental Association.
  • Position the toothbrush at a 45-degree angle at the line where your teeth and gums meet.
  • Brush the gumline and then all sides of your teeth – the inner, outer and chewing surfaces.
  • Use short, circular brushing motions to effectively break up bacteria and food particles.

Following these simple brushing guidelines will help prevent harmful plaque and tartar from accumulating in your mouth and damaging your teeth and gums.

Why You Shouldn’t Forget to Floss

Flossing at least once a day is an important element of good oral hygiene care, but according to research commissioned by Delta Dental only 40% of Americans floss every day – and 20% never floss at all!

Flossing is an effective way to remove bacteria and small bits of food that get stuck in the hard-to-reach spaces between teeth. If left alone, bacteria and food particles can cause gum disease and tooth decay.

Just like with brushing, it is important to floss using the proper technique to thoroughly clean the space between teeth. Using roughly 18 inches of floss, wrap the ends around the thumb of one hand and forefinger of another and gently guide the floss between your teeth in an up-and-down motion. Gently curve the floss around the base of each tooth in a “C” shape and be sure to go slightly beneath the gumline as well. Use a clean section of floss as you move from tooth to tooth.

Brushing and flossing every day with the proper technique will help keep your smile healthy and whole until your next regular dental checkup. For more tips on dental hygiene in Frisco, don’t hesitate to pick up the phone and call a trusted dentist today.
